Held in Louisville, Kentucky, this year's Kentucky Oaks will take place on April 30, just a day before the Kentucky Derby, at Churchill Downs is the perfect prelude to the Run for the Roses. The Kentucky Oaks is a Grade I Purebred horse race for three-year-old fillies. The race presently covers 1 1/8 miles (1811 metres); carry 121 pounds (55 kg).

On May 19, 1875 the first race conducted by the Louisville Jockey Club and the founder of the race is Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. along with the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Oaks is closely associated with the Kentucky Derby, which is held the weekend following the Oaks every year and both races hosted at the United States' oldest continuously operating horse track. The winner of the Kentucky Oaks receives $500,000 and a garland of lilies.

The five spot fit in the wide range trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and jockey Rafael Bejarano considered favorable for the three-time Grade 1 winner.

Louisvillians once referred to the Oaks as "our Derby," implying that the Derby itself had become the domain of celebrities and out-of-town visitors. But now that perception has changed as the Oaks has become nearly as popular as the Derby. • 1 1/8 miles (1811 metres) — 1920 to 1941 and 1982 to present
