So the first BCS standings of 2009 have been released and to no one’s surprise, the Florida Gators—+125 to win this season’s BCS championship at most online sportsbooks—are Kings of the college football hill followed by the Alabama Crimson Tide in the two-spot.

Strangely enough though, Florida dropped to No. 2, trumped by ‘Bama in the Associated Press poll but football fans in “The Swamp” probably don’t care, as their team is tops in the more prestigious poll.

Florida’s first game as the top BCS team is on the road against the Mississippi State Bulldogs and it is a big 22.5-point road fave and with a Total of 48.5.

The Gators will be looking to maintain No. 1 and this Saturday’s game will mark the fifth-straight week when they’ve been favored by double-digits.

The defending BCS champs have been a online college football betting machine rattling off 16 consecutive straight up wins in a row. For sports bettors, when betting against the spread, in their last 14 games in which a betting line has been posted, the Gators sport an 11-2-1 ATS mark – not too shabby at all.

In Florida’s last 11 games when favored by more than 8-points, they have also been impressive, going 8-2-1 against the spread.

After last week’s scare for Florida, this might be a spot where they look to really trounce an opponent.

Talking to online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com about this game, they said the gators are currently seeing about 70% of all the action wagered on the matchup.

Alabama vs. Tennessee

The AP’s No.1 team and the BCS’ No. 2 will host the Tennessee Volunteers and are favored by 14.5-points with an Over/Under of 43—‘Bama is listed at +250 to win the national championship this year.

Despite being favored by over two TDs, Alabama hasn’t been nearly as dominant against Tennessee; the Vols are 10-4 SU vs. the Tide but not such a good bet ATS, going 7-6-1 in those same games.

Tennessee has been very solid in its last nine games when listed at more than +8, going 7-1-1 ATS.

In the Volunteers’ last seven games in Alabama, they have gone 5-2 SU and 5-1-1 ATS.

A dark horse in the race for the BCS championship is the Miami Hurricanes.It’s been a while since The U” has been mentioned as a National contender, but with a current overall record of 5-1 (2-1 in the ACC) and a 10th-place ranking in the BCS, you wouldn’t be crazy to think that Miami has an outside shot in the BCS title game—they are a +2500 longshot to win the national title.

Unlike Florida and Alabama, the ‘Canes are favored by a single-digit this week; they are 5-point home faves for a game against the Clemson Tigers with a 44 Total.Clemson’s last 13 games against conference rivals have produced 10 Unders and 3 Overs and they have gone 6-2 ATS in their last eight ACC matchups.

Miami has been hot in their last nine home games, going 7-2 SU and in their last 18 home games with a posted Total, have 14 Unders and 4 Overs, including five-straight Unders in a row.

The Tigers have been very effective when ‘dogged by 6-points or less, going 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games with the betting line in that range.

Monday Night Football: Broncos vs. Chargers

When planning out how the conclusion to the NFL betting card for Week 6 would shape up, this matchup between the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers couldn’t have been scripted any better. ESPN has to be happy with this matchup. 

On one side of the field, an AFC West team that has surprised many with its .500 start and defensive struggles, desperately seeking to generate something positive out of its second divisional game of the year. And then on the other, an opponent that has already established dominance in the West with wins at home and abroad and looks to this game as a chance to prove to a national TV audience that they are indeed for real.

It all sounds about right; only thing is that somebody forgot to let the Broncos in on the plan.

In a complete role reversal, Denver has busted out of the gate this season with a 5-0 SU/ATS start. Critics shot holes in the record at 3-0, citing the win at Cincinnati as fluke and the triumphs over Cleveland and Oakland as compulsory. But come from behind victories the past two weeks against Dallas and a New England silenced most detractors. The Patriots response to that overtime loss in Denver – a 59-0 blowout vs. Tennessee on Sunday – quieted the rest.

Online sportsbooks have the odds on this one set at -3.5 on the home side Chargers heading into Monday’s betting action. San Diego’s 5-1 record vs. Denver in the past six meetings also had to be taken into account.

Denver’s defense has been the real story this year, led by linebacker Elvis Dumervil (five sacks) and inspired by a rejuvenated Brian Dawkins on the back end. It’s taken the heat off QB Kyle Orton, allowing him to pad a now very impressive 26-12 record as a starter by simple managing the football game, not win it on his arm alone.

Chargers QB Philip Rivers has thrived under the Monday Night lights, posting a 4-0 record and a sparkling 106.9 passer rating, but San Diego will need its 32^nd ranked run-game to come around if it hopes to compete against Denver.

Betting on the Broncos D to keep opponents in check has produced a perfect record of five-straight picks on the "Under" and against this Charger team that cranked out 52 points against them in Week 17, capping a miserable 2008 season, revenge is the order of the day.

San Diego is fully rested off its bye week and Denver has a bye on-deck. The Broncos used to play well before a bye (11-2 ATS) but they are 0-2 SU/ATS the past two years, giving up 82 combined points in those losses. Offensive dominated both meetings last year as these hated rivals combined for 150 total points.

This is the first of three-straight divisional games for San Diego but this does not shape up as a look-ahead spot for either team. More likely, this should turn into one of the hardest hitting Monday games bettors have been treated to all year.

NFL Picks: The Broncos season has been very impressive, but I lean to the Chargers laying -3 (buy the hook), as they get the job done at home on Monday night football.

The first Bowl Championship Series rankings (BCS Rankings) of 2009 will be released this Sunday and as it stands, the Top 3 college football teams, according to the Associated Press and ESPN, are the Florida Gators, the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Texas Longhorns.

Let’s take a look at NCAA football odds for the top three teams as the sports betting public prepares for the rankings. 

Florida Gators

The song remains the same in the No. 1 position as the Gators have maintained their perch atop the Division I rankings since the preseason rankings were released.

Back in early-August, Florida was listed as the odds-on favorite to win both the Southeastern Conference (-225) and repeat as BCS champions (+200).

While the Gators started off the season with two soft opponents (Charleston Southern and Troy), they have faced three sturdier challenges recently and have passed the test, going 3-0 straight up.

Florida defeated the Tennessee Volunteers 23-13 back on September 19 but failed to cover as favorites of 30-something.

They hammered the Kentucky Wildcats 41-7, covering a 20-something pointspread, but received a scare when star QB Tim Tebow suffered a concussion.

Tebow bounced back in a game against LSU a few weeks later when the Gators defeated the Tigers 13-3, covering at 7.5-points.

Florida Gators Odds: Currently, the Florida Gators’ odds have improved, as they are currently -300 to take the SEC and +125 to win back to back BCS titles.

Alabama Crimson Tide

While the Gators own the best record in the SEC East at 5-0, they don’t own the best record in the SEC overall, the 6-0 Alabama Crimson Tide have that honor.

Currently ranked No. 2 in the AP poll, the Tide have definitely been moving since the preseason, when online sportsbook had them ranked No. 5 and listed at +2000 to take this season’s BCS title.

‘Bama has a tough sked going down the stretch however, as they face a tough divisional matchups the likes of the No. 22 South Carolina Gamecocks (the Tide are -17 for that game), the Tennessee Volunteers, the No. 10 LSU Tigers, the Mississippi St. Bulldogs and then the Auburn Tigers.

Alabama Odds: Like the Gators, the Tide’s odds have also improved as they are currently +350 to win the 2010 BCS championship.

Texas Longhorns

While they are still undefeated and atop the Big 12, the Texas Longhorns have taken a small slip in the AP poll.

Ranked as the second-best team in the nation in the preseason (+700 to win the national title at the time), Texas currently sees itself in the No. 3 spot.

The Longhorns can grab some brownie points this week with a convincing win over the No. 20 Oklahoma Sooners in this year’s Red River Rivalry game—Texas is currently a 3.5-point favorite for that game—just in time for the first BCS rankings.

Prior to the release of those rankings, Texas is a +400 favorite in 2010 BCS championship futures online betting.

While Texas, Florida and Alabama have seen their odds to win it all improve, the No. 20 Oklahoma Sooners have seen the opposite occur.

The runners-up to the Florida Gators in last season’s BCS championship, Oklahoma was +500 to win the national title in the preseason but in hindsight, a wager on them wouldn’t have been wise.

Oklahoma’s bad luck started in Week 1 when they not only failed to cover a 21.5-point spread against the BYU Cougars, they lost 14-13 as well.

And the Sooners dealt their BCS chances another blow two weeks ago when they lost to the Miami Hurricanes 21-20.

The Sooners currently aren’t an option in 2010 BCS championship futures betting.

There usually is some controversy when the first BCS rankings are released but it’s a pretty safe bet that Florida, Alabama and Texas will be at the top.

Dallas Unveils New Home:

And in Dallas, little Jerry got to show off his new toy, the Cowboys notched an impressive win and everyone in Cowtown went home happy. After looking awful in Week 1, when the NFL lines came out for Week 2 preseason action Dallas was a small home favorite vs. the Tennessee Titans. The Cowboys covered the spread in their first games in the new stadium, sending fans home happy.

It was pretty funny, though, when the punters that had been pelting the new, million-peg light-bright all through practice actually hit it during the game.

Afterwards Jerry Jones said he built that thing to spec and if the league wants to change it they can foot the bill. Wonder which online sportsbook will be the first to offer an Over/Under prop on number of games until the league caves in and pays for the thing to be raised.

College Football Future Odds-2009 Heisman Trophy Betting

Colt McCoy, the quarterback for the Texas Longhorns is currently listed right next to Bradford as far as the odds are concerned at +275 odds to win the Heisman. McCoy was the real deal for Texas last year. He completed an amazing 76.7% of his passes, throwing for 3,859 yards and collecting 34 passing TDs while giving away just 8 interceptions. McCoy helped lead his team to a victory over the Oklahoma Sooners last season, but the Longhorns missed out on the BCS Championship game due to what many believe is a flawed point system. Nevertheless, McCoy will be back for his senior year, and the best may be yet to come for the Texas QB.

NFL Betting - Hall of Fame Game: Bills vs. Titans

Time to raise the curtain on the 2009 NFL betting season, as it all gets going this weekend in Canton, Ohio with the Hall-of-Fame game.

The Hall-of-Fame game NFL Football betting odds have been listed for a while now. The Tennessee Titans are 3-point favorites over the Buffalo Bills, with a Total set at 31. The number has actually moved a little at a number of online sportsbook, with some of them now showing -2.5.

SPORTSBETTING.com reported fairly balanced action over the first few days the line was posted, but Bills money has been showing up lately. Buffalo has 68% of all the action wagered on this one as we head into the weekend.

I think the sports betting public has this one right with the Bills action. I haven’t made a play on the side yet, and actually I rarely have in the Hall-of-Fame game, but I’m definitely leaning to the underdog. I’m looking at a Buffalo team that tries to win this game and again, in preseason, if a team tries to win a game they usually do.

Preseason Pick

Let’s look at that Total. On only four other occasions has there been a Total set lower than 31. Take note that in each of those four games they all went “Over” the posted number. I like this one to go “Over” as well. Looking at each teams past preseason scoring averages over the years (both what they score and what they give up), the basic numbers come in around the 37 point-mark. But I also think we’ll see these offenses, most notably the second and third string offenses, be able to put up a few points, enough for us to cash on this “Over” play.

NFL Betting Preseason Schedule -NFL Odds

The NFL Betting odds have been listed at online sportsbook for the opening week of the NFL preseason schedule. Leading off the start of the new NFL Betting season is the “Hall-of-Fame” game in Canton, Ohio featuring the Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans. And the QB situation continues to be worth watching. Vince Young is entering his fourth season as a pro and it really is a critical year for him. If he ends up sitting on the bench this season, it could be very tough to resurrect his career.

Kerry Collins comes into camp as the #1 pivot. Give Collins credit, as he did a great job of managing this offense, but let’s all remember, this is Kerry Collins. He needs a ton of support from the running game and play-calling that keeps things very basic. In addition, he needs the benefit of a great defense to bail him out once in a while and to provide field position that puts them in highly advantageous situations. I wouldn’t count on Collins having another near perfect season.

Young will be looking to take the #1 spot away this preseason, and he has a shot – if he can hold it together and step up. This bodes well for those who are betting on the Titans in the preseason. Young is going to want to show very well when he is handed the ball, and in a lot of situations, he should have an edge facing other teams #2 units.

Looking back at the NFL gambling results from previous Hall of Fame Games, last year the Washington Redskins topped the Indianapolis Colts 30-16, with the Redskins covering the pointspread. In 2007, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints kicked off the NFL Betting preseason schedule, with the sports betting world wading in and betting on the Steelers heavily in that matchup. The bettors won that battle, as the Steelers beat the ‘Aints 20-7, covering the spread.

NFL Football Betting Online-Brett Favre Stays Retired

It’s been reported that Brett Favre has let the Minnesota Vikings know that he won’t be playing football this season.

"It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made," Favre told ESPN. "I didn’t feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable."

The news came as a blow to the Viking organization and to those sports bettors who had put money on the Minnesota to win their division, the NFC and/or the Super Bowl. If Favre stepped in to this offense, despite being 39 years old and clearly not as effective as he had been several seasons ago, he made this team a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

The Minnesota Vikings had seemed a perfect fit for quarterback Brett Favre, a playoff-caliber team that would give him an opportunity to play in a familiar offense while seeking the vengeance he craved against the Green Bay Packers.

Favre has talked about his retirement for so many years that no one was shocked when it appeared he was about to return to the NFL Football Betting Online again.

Minnesota won the NFC North division last year despite the lack of production at QB and there is every indication they could be better this year, with or without a chance behind center.

The NFC North division is wide open, particularly now that the Chicago Bears have a starting QB who might actually be able to move the offense. The future odds on the Bears to win the Super Bowl is currently 20-1, with odds of 15-8 to win the division.
