Outstanding pitching has spurred Cincinnati's surprising surge to the top the NL Central. The Reds' chances of remaining there depend largely on starters such as Homer Bailey continuing their recent success.
Coming off the best performance of his career, Bailey takes the mound Tuesday as the Reds try to sweep a two-game home set with the struggling Milwaukee Brewers.
A 6-3 win over Milwaukee (15-23) kept Cincinnati (22-16) in first place for a second straight day, one-half game ahead of defending Central champion St. Louis. The Reds, who moved into the top spot by taking two of three from the Cardinals over the weekend, are in that position this late into a season for the first time since 2006.
Gomes completed a five-run rally in the seventh inning by hitting a three-run homer, and the Reds earned themselves a second straight day in first place by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 on Monday night.
Gomes' homer off Todd Coffey (1-1) sent the Reds to their eighth victory in nine games, a surge that moved them into the top spot in the NL Central -- a place they haven't been so deep into a season since 2006.
