John Isner and Nicolas Almagro could be of huge importance to how this week’s tournament turns out.

Isner and Sam Querrey put the American team in a strong position last night by winning their doubles clash against Australia. Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan were expected to play last night, but did not manage to get back from Madrid in time, having made the final in the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open. 

Isner will be attempting to make the most of his big serve in this match, though Almagro is a tough opponent on clay. That said, Almagro failed to break Tomas Berdych’s serve at all yesterday, and will seriously struggle against Isner if his returning is of a similar standard today.

With so much to play for, this should be an intense match. Isner is just about the favourite, though Almagro is likely to raise his game with Spain’s chances of winning the event at stake. This match is followed by Sam Querrey v Daniel Gimeno-Traver, which may even decide the tie
