Sixth seed Sybille Bammer of Austria was involved in a tough first-round clash as French wildcard Pauline Parmentier gave the home fans something to shout about before succumbing 2-6 6-4 7-5.

Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues, seeded fifth, suffered no such uncomfortable moments as she breezed to a 6-1 6-0 victory over Sandra Zahlavova.

There were also straight-sets victories for the seventh and eighth seeds, Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova beating Mariana Duque Marino 6-1 6-1 and Elena Baltacha of Great Britain seeing off Sorana Cirstea 6-3 7-5.

French wildcard Kristina Mladenovic pulled off a notable victory as the 17-year-old, ranked 235th in the world, beat Austria's Stefanie Voegele 6-3 1-6 7-6 (7/5).

Elsewhere, there were wins for Sofia Arvidsson, Lucie Hradecka, Kristina Barrois, Julia Goerges, Yvonne Meusburger and Dia Evtimova.
